Andres Aguilar, a 25-year-old runner, died after collapsing near the finish line of the Carlsbad Half Marathon on Sunday. Aguilar, who experienced a witnessed cardiac arrest, was transported to Tri-City Medical Center where he passed away. His official cause of death is under investigation by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He was among nine participants hospitalized during the race, with eight transports occurring within a 45-minute window around 10 a.m. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Aguilar had moved to San Diego two years prior and was running his first half-marathon with coworkers.

Event organizers, In Motion Events, expressed deep sadness and detailed their extensive medical plan, which included four ambulances, first aid stations, and CPR-certified race guards. Aguilar's family urged others to get regular medical checkups in light of their tragic loss.
