*CONSIDER THE SOURCE* The Inter-Tribal Pow Wow, Baltimore 2008

For over 25 years, the freaks and weirdo art types in the know, fittingly celebrated the beginning of Spring every year, down on the trash-strewn banks of the Patapsco River here in Charm City, Baltimore. The best and hippest happening around here, every year was always "The Inter-Tribal Pow Wow" which took place down by the Hanover Street Bridge starting out as a small, circle of friends, boat launching party with a little celebratory music by mostly art bands from M.I.C.A. There, on the last Sunday in April, was always the place to be. Smiling people arrived festively attired, colorfully decked out with feathers, weird makeups, hats and dogs, and coolers...and Balloons! (Never a minute too soon for the balloon afternoon). Despite everybody being mindful in trying to keep things as cool and hip and secret handshake-like as possible; every year it grew and grew...Never advertised, it was, word of mouth only. For the first "Pow Wow", someone brought a few small guitar amps, set em up in the weeds and garbage on top of a 15 foot hill looking down and out over the water. That's the way it was for many years, until the makeshift stage area moved down by the water, now facing upwards (like where it is in this video). I never heard of "Consider The Source" before seeing them live, right here in 2008. It didnt take but half a song before I ran the quarter mile back to my car to grab my handycam and get these obviously masterful musician's documented. The guitar player has a hybrid double neck with one being micro-tonal for his trademark Arabic stylings...lots of pedals too... Amazing slap bass player, and a drummer that can not only keep up with him but still drive it too...Amazing all, as evidenced here. It was rare that any out of town bands ever played "Pow Wow". After the show, I learned that CTS were down from NYC. Night capping the festivities when the sun goes down; the end is signaled by the ritualistic burning of that year's own tribal effigy, lord of the flies style... Different artists every year put together the wood monuments to be burned....errrr I mean Art pieces....some more elaborate than others....All burned, to everyone's delight, especially as the heat from the fire was always welcome when the sun went down and it got cold. Did I mention Balloons?
