Monday AM Tropical Update: Eta moves into the Gulf of Mexico

Eta made landfall as a strong tropical storm in Lower Matecumbe Key, Florida, around 11 p.m. EST Sunday. Tropical Storm Eta is expected to intensify over the next 24 hours and become a hurricane once again as it tracks into the Gulf of Mexico Monday.

Conditions across South Florida will remain unsettled tonight with strong, damaging wind gusts and flooding rain of concern in places such as Miami, Palm Beach, Key Largo and Key West from tonight through Monday night. Although tropical rainfall will ebb across Cuba overnight, life-threatening flooding rainfall will continue to be a concern over parts of Cuba through Monday night.

Eta will be a 1 on the AccuWeather RealImpact; Scale for Hurricanes for Florida. This is based on the life-threatening heavy rainfall that will lead to flooding, damaging winds, storm surge, and a number of other economic factors. The heaviest rainfall totals of 8-12 inches with an AccuWeather Local StormMax; of 16 inches is expected across far South Florida. Wind gusts of 60-80 mph are expected near and to the north of where Eta tracks later tonight into early Monday, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax; of 90 mph over the Florida Keys.
