“We lost everything:” Storm Eta lashes Honduras with high winds, heavy rains

Storm Eta pummelled Honduras with torrential rain on Thursday, Nov. 5, after triggering major floods and landslides in Central America, reportedly killing dozens of people and stranding dozens of fishers in the Atlantic.

One of the fiercest storms to hit Central America in years, Eta struck Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane on Tuesday, Nov. 3, before weakening as it moved inland and into neighbouring Honduras.

In western Honduras high winds and heavy rain have damaged hundreds, if not thousands, of homes, forcing people to take cover in shelters. Local resident Jose Castellanos said “We lost everything, we practically lost everything, we were left in the street."

On Friday morning, the eye of the storm was on the edge of Belize's coast and heading out to the Caribbean Sea, charting a course to Cuba and Florida this weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said.
