Leopard Hunting Baboon

A normal leopard would never dare to stalk baboons in broad daylight. The troop appears to be completely unaware of the impending threat. She's out in the open, but she's remarkably unseen. She goes for the kill and comes away with a minor but significant victory. Her cub will be taken care of. I'm always amazed when I see a big cat help another animal, simply because big cats devour other animals and even attack other big cats. Watch as this leopard brings his newest victim, an adult baboon, to safety, only to discover a young baboon alone in the grass. I wouldn't be shocked if the leopard's killer is the mother of the young baboon, but the leopard goes over to the baby baboon and lays down next to him.

When the leopard senses danger, it softly takes the baby into its mouth and carries it to safety. After dropping the infant baboon, it confronts the perpetrator, a hyena, and growls at it, indicating it is not welcome. It returns to the baby and clings to it, licking it as if it were its own child. The leopard returns the small monkey to its proper place and keeps it close for its own safety. It's incredible how some of these predators, especially when they're young, can demonstrate empathy for other species. Unless, of course, the leopard is just getting ready to eat the little baboon. After spotting a baboon, a leopard runs straight for it.

Once the big cat has the baboon in its grip, there isn’t much the primate can do. The leopard kills and carries the dead baboon in front of all his friends that don’t do anything, but watch their friend be dragged away by the deadly feline. The leopard is much stronger, and his bite has crushed the baboon to death. Watch how fast and skilled the leopard is in this video when he rushes up a tree to try and snatch a baboon. The baboon hangs for dear life, by a branch that’s not in the leopard’s reach. However, the leopard doesn’t give up and forces the baboon to jump off the tree and once on the ground, it’s “easy peasy” for the big cat to make the kill.

Chimpanzee Hunting Monkey

It’s incredible to see how aggressive chimps can be. You can see this chimp digging into this dead monkey. Chimps are not the friendly vegetarians we were told they were. They do eat a diet made up mostly of fruits, but it’s obvious, they are omnivores and will eat other animals. You can see this chimp digging into this dead monkey. Chimps are not the friendly vegetarians we were told they were. They do eat a diet made up mostly of fruits, but it’s obvious, they are omnivores and will eat other animals. Even though chimps prefer the meat of other mammals, it accounts for only 2% of their diet. These chimps are on the lookout for the Colobus monkey, one of their favorite foods.

The male colobus attempts to scare the chimps away. Even though he isn't much bigger than they are, he fearlessly continues and shouts out to the rest of the team. Reinforcements arrive, and they intend to complete the task. The whole family gets involved in the hunt. The catch is excellent, and there is plenty of meat to go around. A community-wide hunt like this brings members of the family closer together. There is a lot of action high up in the trees as this chimp is looking for food. The little monkeys panic and for good reason when a chimp snatches one of them up. Chimps have sharp teeth, but to kill prey, chimps hit their prey with lethal force against a hard surface. They are extremely strong, so a small monkey like the one in the video has no chance of surviving.

Did you know that chimpanzees hunt monkeys and other animals for their meat? They hunt in a very organized way, although they're not always successful. This was simply a special treat when a couple of chimps managed to catch a monkey. On many occasions we only see the buildup, but not the actual catching and killing. In this case, all was seen and caught on camera. At 150 strong this community of chimps is the biggest yet found in Africa. Their numbers are so large they need a big territory with plenty of Fig trees, and they are willing to fight for it. In this video, they are hunting their favorite monkey, the colobus. Some of these monkeys will perish after the chimp army has marched through their territory.
