When the British Attacked the Capitol: The Crisis Of 1814
This talk will examine the means and motives of the British invasion of the Chesapeake and explain why they burned the Capitol, White House, and other selected targets. Dr. Alan Taylor, Pulitzer Prize winner, will place this military assault in the political context of a deeply divided nation embroiled in intense partisan conflict, as most Federalists worked to undermine a war effort associated with the governing Democratic-Republicans led by President James Madison.
