How to Stretch Watercolor Paper (cheap & easy method!)

Today I am going to show you how to stretch your watercolor paper so it will stay perfectly flat when you paint on it. The advantage of stretching you paper is that you can use less expensive thinner papers without them buckling when wet. This will save you a considerable amount of money. Today I will stretch 90# Fabriano watercolor paper, it is a lovely student grade paper and a real bargain. I got a 75 sheet pad of 9"x12" paper for $15 a while ago but Blick has the 9x12 pad of 75 sheets $21 and the larger one is $26 at Blick online and since they are not on sale you can use a coupon on them too, here is the link: http://www.dickblick.com/products/fabriano-studio-watercolor-pads/ (I don't get anyhing if you buy them, just sharing:)

Supplies:
90lb watercolor paper
gummed paper tape
a spray bottle of water or a vat of water
a sponge
a board to stretch the paper on like hardboard or a paneling sample (free from a hardware store!)

To begin wet the board with a sponge. The wet the back of the paper with a spray bottle of water (or by soaking it in a tub of cold water) and lay the paper on the board. If you use a spray bottle you will need to we the front of the paper st this time. Then use the sponge to wipe over the paper and smooth out any bubbles and soak up any extra water. Tear or cut the gummed tape to the lengths of the sides, wet the back of the tape with the spray bottle or sponge and center over the board and edge of paper. Lay flat to dry completely then it is ready to use.

To remove the paper later I cut inside the tape to release the paper then tear off the tape from the board, soaking if necessary to remove it.
