This is a historic release. For the longest time, it was thought that Mike Millard had never taped Queen, but the rediscovery of his masters has brought new material to light. In this new batch, it was found that Mike taped Queen's second show at the Forum on the Races Tour. You may be thinking while reading the title that this isn't a new show, but Mike's recording does not match up with the currently circulating tape that has been attributed to this night, meaning that the old source is actually from Queen's first show on March 2nd. As is tradition with Mike Millard recordings, this is in fantastic quality and it's certainly the definitive recording from the Races Tour. It's got a few minor cuts, but it otherwise complete, and it reveals a nice little rendition of Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting during the encores, something which Queen had tried out a few times in 1977. As far as the performance goes, it's also very strong. Freddie actually sounds great all things considered. This tour of North America is generally associated with Freddie in poor shape, but he sounds pretty good tonight, within the same ranks as New York from the previous month. He gives a great rendition of Sweet Lady, a song which he notoriously struggled with when he wasn't in top form, which should be telling of how he sounds through the rest of the night. The performance is absolutely electric, with plenty of energy filling the arena as all members are firing on all cylinders, perfectly captured in the explosive oldies encore. All seems to go right for Queen in LA. Thanks to Mike Millard (RIP) for his wonderful work, and thanks to the guys at JEMS for getting this out to the public.
