Charles Ives "Putnam's Camp" - Michael Tilson Thomas conducts

This is the second of Charles Ives's 'Three Places in New England' which had their first performance in 1930. It is a riotous depiction of Fourth of July celebrations taking place at Putnam's Camp, Redding, Connecticut. This camp was a historic landmark established to honor General Israel Putnam who had played an important part in the American Revolutionary War. 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' is just one of the many tunes heard in this piece, creating the chaotic sounds of community bands, near and far, all marching around at the same time. In this rousing performance from 13 January 1970, the 25-year-old Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the Boston Symphony of which he was then assistant conductor. (From 'ICA Classics' DVD ICAD 5111).
