What a lovely basspart!!

One of the ’secrets’ of this bassline is the slides which Shaun Ward uses frequently. There are the ‘obvious’ slides as for instance in bar 8 where Shaun uses the slide before the Verse begins.

But I especially like the slides in the middle and end of the Verses. Sliding from the A towards the G note gives a certain ‘slow’ feeling. I don’t know exactly to give words to this, so please just listen!

And the slide I really really like is the slide in bar 36. You keep the note for 3 beats and not sooner than the 4th beat you let the slide hear. And the detail here is to not strike the string on the fourth beat, but just let it slide without hitting the string. Listen also at bar 72 (just before Verse 3)

And of course the licks in the intro and interludes are very nice to play!
Please pay attention to the timing of the lick in for instance bar 68 (but also bar 4 and 64). The licks starts on the second half of the second beat. It’s very tempting to play this lick earlier… But please don’t….

And one of the others ‘secrets’ of this bassline are the short (staccato) notes which Shaun Ward uses frequently. Listen for instance at Verse 1 bars 11; 12.15 and 16.

I play this song on a Fender Jazz bass with roundwound strings. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used except a bit compression and a preamp. Don’t forget to tune your bass a little bit higher (A4 = 445 Hz).
