The bass part starts at 00:46

I’ve made this video on special request of Lee. Thanks you, because it’s a very nice song with a very nice bass part!!

I play this song on a 5-string bass but I only use 4-strings (E-A-D-G) so you can play along with this song with a 4-string bass. Also the transcription (tabs/score) is done for a 4-string bass.

I think this is a typical Verdine White bass part! It’s got rhythm; it’s got melody; it’s got beautiful passing and chord notes; slides; staccato (short) notes; etc.

Verdine uses a lot of chromatic notes which lead into the next chord note. Het does this a lot. Listen for instance at bar 19 (chromatic towards the Ab chord) and also bar 21 and 22 where the chromatic notes are played just before root note of the next bar.

There are some really nice slides in bars 27 and 28 followed by a fast 32th lick in bar 29 to complete this figure.

In Chorus 3 there’s a chord change, when the Chorus is played in Fm in stead of Cm.

And rhythmically Verdine surprises us in bar 67, 68 and 69 where he plays these high notes just after the first beat. This is a kind of ‘question-answer’ lick, where the question is in beat 4 of bar 66 and 68 and the answers are in the first beat of bar 67, 68 and 69

And I do like the way Verdine doesn’t start on the root note a lot of the time. He does this for instance in bar 38 where he starts on the Eb note; shortly followed by the rootnote E.
He continues this approach in Chorus 3, where he plays and Eb on the first beat, shortly followed by the root note F. Het also does this in bar 51 and 54. Het repeats the Eb-F lick on almost every Fm7 chord which follows. I think he really makes a statement by playing this lick in the beginning of each Chorus. I think he says: pay attention the Chorus is starting (again). Really really nice!!!

Enjoy!!!!!!

If you like to watch/listen to this song with only Bass & Drums, please go to this video on my channel: https://youtu.be/B07zLLf7_QU?si=2EtJtnTkmiwfXmCj

I play this song on a Jacaranda 5-string bass with roundwound strings. I only use 4 strings with standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used except a bit compression.
