Such a famous song and such a recognizable bass part! It’s really much fun to play this song.
You can play the main groove on different places on the bass. I’ve chosen to start the main groove in E on the seventh fret of the A string. This gives the opportunity to play the main groove in the 7th and 8th position (you don’t have to shift a lot); it makes it easy to play the backwards slide (for instance in the bar before Verse 1).
The main groove in A (bar 15-16) could be played in the 1st and 2nd position, but I’ve chosen to start with an open A string and then start at the 3th position (note = C); go to the E on the A string and play the slide (bar 16 note = B) on the D-string. Playing these notes on these strings gives the best sound in my opinion. If you’d stick to the 1st and 2nd position the E on the D string and the B on the G string would sound ‘thin’. Even with flatwound strings (as I do on this video).
I like the variations in the main groove in Outro. For instance the slide in bar 64 (slide towards the high F# note) and the rhythm (and melodic) shift he plays in bar2 92-94.
Enjoy this lovely song!!!
I play this song on a Fender Precision Heavy Relic with flatwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a pre-amp.
