Clovis, California — As the CIF State Track and Field Championships approach, debate over transgender athletes in high school sports has resurfaced. CIF will again use its pilot entry program, designed to widen participation for cisgender girls while letting transgender athletes compete. AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, is expected to run in the girls division at the meet. California law allows transgender students to participate in school sports consistent with their gender identity. The policy, first rolled out last year, allows more cisgender female competitors to qualify in events with transgender participants. Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce said CIF confirmed the pilot’s return; she argues the program reveals unfairness and that any policy changes would require action at the state level. She contends adults in governing bodies are failing students. Others counter that the controversy diverts attention from student-athletes, and that Hernandez should be celebrated for competing.
