About 200 Sanger High School students walked out Friday to protest ICE deportations, with roughly 50 more students leaving Washington Academic Middle School. The demonstrators gathered near Sanger Park at Academy Avenue and 5th Street as police patrolled the area to maintain safety. In advance, both the Sanger Police Department and Sanger Unified School District issued statements. Police reminded students to stay on campus during instructional hours and warned that adults who assist minors in leaving could face misdemeanor charges under California Penal Code section 272; those who engage in vandalism or incitement could be arrested. Sanger Unified clarified that the walkout was not school-sanctioned. It offered a designated on-campus time between 2nd and 3rd periods for students to share perspectives in a respectful setting, after which students were expected to return to classes. Officials cautioned that leaving campus could result in truancy, disciplinary consequences, and potential ineligibility for student-athletes.
