A Big Commotion as the Elephants Chase After an Impala Herd
It's a noisy day on the reserve! Young elephants Mambo and Limpopo have found a herd of impalas to chase, and the two are having the time of their lives. Elephant cows Setombe and Bubi soon join them, not wanting to miss out on the fun. This is not good news for the impalas, as Setombe is the biggest and oldest female in the herd.
Setombe slaps her ears against her body and trumpets loudly in order to call the other elephants over. She stands still and listens for an answering call. Though she may hear one, the other elephants are far away and any sounds they make may not be audible to humans. Zindoga, Bubi's son, is the first elephant to arrive. He greets his mother, but Setombe is not satisfied yet. She calls to the other elephants again, and listens for another answering call.
Setombe starts walking around, with her head help up high and her tail parallel to the ground in order to look bigger. This helps her to look more threatening to the impalas. While she circles the area, Timisa and Setombe's daughter Klaserie pop out from the bushes.
Wanting to be even more threatening to the poor impalas, Setombe starts scuffing her feet against the ground to make noise. This is very different from how elephants usually walk – elephants have feet that mould over objects and absorb sound, enabling them to walk silently. However, Setombe is purposefully trying to be loud. Klaserie joins her mother and starts scuffing her feet too.
Timisa starts holding her little head up high as well – she's ready to join the game. She even attempts to chase an impala! The last elephant to show up is Pisa, who joins a few of the others on the sand mounds. Setombe is still very invested in the game, but the younger elephants are soon distracted by the sand mounds. Mambo and Limpopo are still busy chasing impalas in the distance.
In the meantime, Matriarch Tokwe and elephant bull Fishan forage nearby, completely ignoring the commotion. Fishan isn't even bothered by the large group of impalas that have gathered right in front of him. Elephant calf Khanyisa, allomother Kumbura and adoptive mother Lundi start to walk a bit closer to the action. Khanyisa sees the impalas and spreads her ears, but decides to leave them alone today. It might be best to leave chasing impalas for when Limpopo is babysitting her. That's good news for the impalas, who finally find a new safe spot to forage in.
