Brahms: Symphony No 2 (1940) Mengelberg/Concertgebouw

Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73

1. Allegro, ma non troppo (0:08)
2. Adagio, ma non troppo (13:14)
3. Allegretto grazioso (22:41)
4. Allegro can spirito (27:48)

Willem Mengelberg, conductor
The Concertgebouw Orchestra

Recorded on April 9, 1940
at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam

What Brahms did with this brooding, melancholic music could only be the product of his particular genius. People have been tempted to compare this to Beethoven's "Pastorale" symphony, but the composer himself quickly attempted to dissuade any such comparisons, stating that it was the "saddest material" that he had ever composed.

Mengelberg's studio recording, like all of his Brahms, is quite notable for his deft handling of its emotional content, which is so well-balanced. This has always been one of our favorite recordings of this symphony.

Note to Subscribers:
It has been a couple of weeks since our last post as our studio has moved. This is the first time we have mastered content at such high altitudes and it took some getting used to at first; but we have always wanted a studio in the forest with air that smells like the sweet perfume of tall pines.
