Shostakovich Plays Shostakovich: Three Preludes and Fugues
Dimitri Shostakovich
3 Preludes and Fugues from Op. 87
1. No. 2 in A minor (0:07)
2. No.13 in F sharp (2:07)
3. No. 14 in E flat (8:41)
Dimitri Shostakovich, pianist
Recorded on September 12, 1958
at Salle Walgram, Paris
Our prior restorations of Shostakovich performing his own works have been very well received by subscribers, and we felt that it is time to share some more.
Shostakovich was a remarkable pianist, and his playing of his own works are especially memorable. As a student he worked in a silent cinema in Moscow to pay his way. There is a certain edgy quality that often seems to recall those days in his playing; a working man's virtuoso who made music in a cold drafty theater while Valentino got the girl and Cossacks charged the people on the Odessa Steps.
All the more remarkable is how beautifully that youthful skill translated into the pure music of his later years, and how irresistible it is to modern listeners today.
Transfer mastering (1993-2015): Parlophone, London
Field acoustic restoration (2023): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio
