Bruno Walter, conductor
Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York

Record on March 25, 1952
at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York

Bruno Walter was seen as one of the foremost Beethoven conductors of his time. The present recording from 1952 is the great conductor at his prime.

Although Beethoven is best remembered for music that broke the standards of his classical predecessors, his symphonies often reflect the ongoing influence they had upon him. The first is clearly influenced strongly by Mozart, the second a mixture of both he and Haydn by a composer seeking a new style. After the "Eroica" Beethoven turns with a newfound sense of individualism to his greatest mentor and teacher, Haydn, as if to catch his breath before what was to come.

The Fourth Symphony is a great achievement, and has often been described as a slightly shorter peak among two great Everests. But, truth be told, it is a masterpiece in its own right, and Beethoven himself was quite pleased with it.
