Recorded on November 29, 1938
at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
In recent months we have endeavored to restore the greatest recordings of Brahms Symphonies from the early 20th century in the best fidelity possible.
The Mengelberg recordings of Brahms Symphonies are just too good not to be offered here. Over the years we have searched for the best sourcing so they could be heard in the quality that they deserve.
It turns out that best version was already in our collection of goodies, and are taken from the original matrices. A new approach was all that was required to get the most out of them.
This video can be seen as something of a good reference in terms of what we should expect to hear in modern restoration from recordings of this age, but seldom do from the record industry. It can't be that hard. I do my work on an inexpensive laptop with Audition and a decent pair of Class D monitors.
Transfer (c. 1980s): TELDEC
Field acoustic and other restoration (2023): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio
