TIMESTAMPS
00 Can Amazon beat Alibaba outside their home markets?
37 What is the story behind Amazon? Amazon started in 1994, known as online bookstore. Today is the tipping point. 82% of people in U.S. are on Amazon Prime, they became bigger than Walmart, they are biggest in cloud and are now building a marketplace.
38 What challenges is Amazon facing? Getting the trust from sellers on their platform that Amazon will not compete with them is a challenge; as is the relationship with their employees. In cloud Microsoft is a big competitor. Another big competition is in the offline world with Walmart and in the streaming video they encounter Netflix.
29 What is great about Amazon? Their aim to become the most customer-centric company.
41 What is the offer you can’t refuse model? The minimal value to customers is good price and product and offer great digital convenience. Above that, Brands have to become a partner in life of customers and do well for the planet.
08 How is Amazon doing on providing ultimate convenience? Amazon is doing a fantastic job on creating a frictionless experience both in physical retail with Amazon Go as well as online purchases with for example their Alexa speaker products.
40 Is Amazon a partner in life? Their partnering strength is in saving people time, money and energy when buying on Amazon. But Amazon is also broadening their offering in many services to become that partner in life.
05 How is Amazon changing society and the world? Amazon is investing in sustainable processes and logistics, but they could go much further if they would use their influence to change behavior of consumers during the buying process.
46 What is the story behind Alibaba? Alibaba started in 1999 as a B2b online yellow pages to offer access to Chinese factories to the world. In 2003 he entered the C2C market, with a philosophy to help the small companies to grow and create trust in China’s e-commerce. From that Jack Ma created lots of marketplaces, payment, cloud, logistics and endless other services in many industries.
44 What are the opportunities for Alibaba? The main opportunities are in continued domestic growth in the years to come, as well as in cloud and logistics globally.
04 What challenges is Alibaba facing? In their competition with Amazon going global, customer service will be a main challenge. But their main challenges are internally in China with regulation and societal goals of Beijing. The FinTech regulations and competition with MiniPrograms from Tencent and others will remain a fight to win the hearts of consumers.
26 How is Alibaba doing on providing ultimate convenience? The one thing Alibaba figured out is how to merge the online with the offline experience and help the brands to offer relevant products to consumers through their unified ecosystem and user interface. What makes the convenience so attractive is that buying on their platforms is often more an experience than a purchase process.
08 Is Alibaba a partner in life? Alibaba has always focused on helping buyers and sellers to trade more efficiently through advanced technologies. But primarily their range of services in many industries allows them to tailor services better to user journeys. Their main partners are the retailers who are seamlessly integrated with their system making all business much more effective, but also feature rich through their large spectrum of platforms.
50 How is Alibaba changing society and the world? Alibaba is maybe the most inclusive company in China as they have given hundreds of millions of people loans, trade, work and sales opportunities to aid them to improve their lives. Their CSR app is also a fantastic example of how to make a real difference. The biggest change however comes from their green logistics.
