Queensland Police has said that motorists have been “taking more risks” due to a sharp decline in road enforcement over the last five years.

During this time, the number of road deaths across Queensland reportedly climbed from a record low of 220 in 2019 to 301 in 2024.

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler told the ABC, “There was a period of time undoubtedly that the general public felt that there weren’t many police out there, so you could take more risks.”

“You could speed, you could have a few drinks at the pub and still drive home. Well, we’re here to tell you, you can’t do that.”

The new road safety blitz will see an increase in high-visibility patrols, random breath testing, and the deployment of speed detection equipment, with the aim of ensuring that drivers are following the rules “year round”, and not just during peak holiday periods.
