Butterfly Puddling

Butterflies are usually seen on flowers. But they sometimes land on damp ground or salty surfaces. WHY? Nectar is the staple of a butterfly's diet. But they can not live on sugar alone. They need minerals too. So they occasionally sip from mud puddles. This behavior occurs more often in male butterflies, which incorporate the minerals into their sperm. These nutrients are transferred to the female during mating.
