A detailed example of a large lava lake with crustal plates shifting in various directions.
The vent was like a large echo chamber. The lack of wind allowed for clean audio.

In some ways, it's like watching Earth in its early times as it cooled forming continents.

Nikon D800 and the Nikon 180mm 2.8 lens.
Captured at 1080p and scaled to 4k 60fps.

Captured in 2014.

The area as seen no longer exists.

As for the current eruption, no one knows how long this will last or if it will erupt in other locations. For now, it's confined within the summit caldera. If the lake continues to rise it will eventually be visible from most viewing areas.

The eruption continues to this date.
