Video of the ongoing summit eruption at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

This time instead of a full and short version I've broken it down to different cameras.
My Panasonic G9 and the 8-18mm lens were used for this video.

Halemaumau vent inside of Kilauea volcanoes caldera.
Viewed from the newest public viewing area in the park.
The lava lake rose high enough to be seen from this area.
Only the far western portion of the vent can be seen but fortunately, it's where the eruption vent/cone is located.

Dec 2, 2021

I'm about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the erupting vent.
I rarely visit popular viewing areas to avoid crowds and crowd noise.
In the distance is the snow-covered summit of Mauna Loa.

The air was still so constant gas venting could easily be heard echoing throughout the area.

This vantage point is right where the trade showers creep in from the east (our backs) and end.
This means it can often be engulfed in a cloudy mist at any time of the day or night.
You're also at the edge of the collapse of the main caldera and its steaming cliffs.
In other words, there can be misty rains, clouds, and or steam present. Check your lens often as it will mist up often. I was often shooting through one or all of the above.
It can be cold too. The 40s in the winter months at night. Add in the wind and it's downright chilly.

I shot with both of my Panasonic cameras.
The GH5 with the Leica 100-400mm (200-800mm 35mm equivalent) for all of the close-up clips and the G9 with the Lumix 8-18mm (16-36mm 35mm equivalent) or the 12-35mm (24-70mm equivalent) for all of the wide ones.
Both had mics but I used my remote recordings for this video. Crowd chatter while sometimes interesting just didn't fit this setting.

I set my Zoom H1N a ways away directed at the vent and my GoPro 8 further back to pick up the birds singing in the forest starting just before sunrise. The wind and the vent activity have to be just perfect to capture any audio from that distance. The churning pond in the vent echoes off of the caldera walls. The birds are loud and upwind so that's easy.

No one knows how long this will last or if it will erupt in other locations. For now, it's confined within the caldera. If the lake continues to rise it will eventually be visible from most viewing areas.

The eruption continues to this date.
I'll have more videos coming soon.
