Low discretionary spending a ‘domestic issue’ not influenced by international developments

Judo Bank Chief Economic Adviser Warren Hogan says tight discretionary spending figures prove to be a "domestic problem" the RBA has got to get a grip of.

Figures released Tuesday showed a record 12-month drop, with Aussies spending more on necessities than luxuries.

“This reinforces that this is a domestic problem,” Mr Hogan told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“This is a problem the RBA has got to deal with, and more generally our government’s got to deal with, it’s not to be blamed on international developments.

“You can see it in the retail sales numbers that came out today, consumers are still under the pump, and the discretionary spend is weak.”
