In general, the Lord Buddha Sakkyamuni presented the three Yanas - Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Each has their own unique topics and practices. Vajrayana is one of the yanas, called the "Diamond Path" or "Secret Path". There are many terms there, but in the more expanded layout of categories, Vajrayana has four stages in general. There are 1) Cha.gyu, 2) Chu.gyu, 3) Nal.jor.gyu, and 4) La.mey.gyu. These are the four stages of tantra. Among all these tantras, when all the hearing, reflecting and meditating are done accordingly, then all of these practices are condensed into Guru Yoga practice. These Guru Yoga practices are the essential practice of the Vajrayana, but they are very complicated due to our low faculties and low understanding. All of these contribute to make it complicated.
But, being that we are devotees to the Buddha, and especially dedicated to practice the Karma Kagyu lineage, we should expose a little bit. Some people may have a good experience, some people may not have so deep an experience, and some people may have no experience. This is all depending on one's own understanding of Dharma, and especially one's understanding of Vajrayana, and one's devotion, and one's compassion, that makes one's Guru Yoga practice become more important. Lama Lodu Rinpoche is presenting these practices in the hopes that practitioners will gain some blessings from the enlightened ones for those who are serious to Buddhism and to the lineage.
"Without having a lama, there is no name of the Buddha."
"Those thousand kalpas Buddhas are all relying on the lamas."
