I converted Amla berries into yummy sugar candies to keep my Grandmother healthy! | Traditional Me

After raining continuously in the past few weeks, now the dry season has started. Due to this sudden weather change, suddenly grandmother got sick with a phlegm attack! For safe side she was sent to Vedha mama’s (Ayurvedic doctor's) house to get some medicine with the brother! Vedha mama (Ayurvedic uncle) is a distant relative of ours. The Ayurvedic house is very well known with everyone in our village as they visit Veda mama for every trouble and sickness before trying other alternatives.

Ayurvedic uncle has given grandmother 4 dried herbal medicinal packs to boil into a potion and drink. At the same time she had been advised by him to eat Amla berries(indian gooseberry) as much as she can!Unfortunately grandmother do not fancy Amla berries at all. So I spent time thinking and making few Amla candies for grandmother, so at least one or two Amla fruits will go into her body!

There is no house In our grandmother’s ancestral land and we call it “mahagedara idama". This ancestral land is flourished with previously planted trees of different herbal value! The Amla tree in our ancestral land was laden with those Amla berries(indian gooseberry). That tree has a high medicinal value as it’s a medicinal amla tree. There is another variety of Amla called “ maha nelli”(a large variety of Amla). Those Amla fruits are a bit bigger than the normal variety. The small Amla fruits have covered the entire tree. It was a beautiful sight to see where so many clusters of Amla fruits were overwhelmingly covering the whole tree. I felt so excited to hug the whole tree.

Since Ayurvedic uncle had advised grandmother to drink the herbal potion as given and had advised her to eat Amla berries as much as possible, I made sweet Amla candies by using one part of the Amla berries(indian gooseberry) that I picked from the tree. It was a very sweet sight to look at those sweets once mixed up and coated with rock sugar coating the palette with that rich sweet taste of the rock sugar. I boiled some more Amla berries(indian gooseberry) and immersed them in a sweet solution of rich pure bees honey. When preserve in bees honey together with cinnamon, mace and dried ginger flakes, Amla berries(indian gooseberry) get a distinctive rich flavor. They are very nutritious to the body as well. At the same time I made a drink to have it in the evening with curry leaves and ginger juice. To make the juice a bit more sweet I added a bit of sugar into it as well. But the good news with this juice is that the blood sugar level get controls very effectively!

Apart from the dried herbs that Vedha mama sent, to add to the potion, brother had to bring few more prescribed raw herbs from our garden as well. It was very convenient to find those raw herbs from the vicinity of our house without spending much time. The medicinal list was full of herbal ingredients which made the potion quite thick in consistency. I knew it must have been bitter by the way grandmother gulped it down.

I removed the pits of the rest of the Amla berries and kept them out for sun drying. I thought of sending these sun dried Amla berries to Vedha mama(Ayurvedic uncle) through brother ,when he take grandmother for her next visit.
