Ultrasound Guided Peripheral IV Insertion - "Out-of-plane" Approach

1. Ensure you know which side of the probe is left.
2. Watching the probe, insert needle in the skin at the center, with the vein lined up on the center of the screen.
3. Angle the probe toward the needle to achieve a 90 degree angle with the needle.
4. Slide the probe toward you until you find the tip of the needle.
5. Ensure the needle tip is pointing directly above the center of the vein.
6. Advance the needle, then advance the probe in a stepwise fashion, keeping your probe just ahead of the needle tip after each insertion.
7. Follow the needle into the vein, then once deep enough in the vein, thread off the catheter.
