Super cute baby giraffe calf near Satara Kruger National Park
This must be the smallest and cutest baby giraffe calf I have ever seen on safari in The Kruger National Park.
A female giraffe gives birth standing up. Their young fall about 2 m to the ground and can stand up within an hour of birth. The average gestation period for giraffes is 453-464 days or approximately 15 months.
The average height at birth is about 1.8 metres (6 feet) with a tendency for the females to be slightly smaller than the males.
A newborn calf weighs about 65 kilograms. Newborn calves grow very quickly and can nearly double their height in the first year. Usually, a giraffe will only have one calf although twins have been recorded.
This little one was south of Satara Camp. Satara camp is famous for giraffes, large herds of buffalo and lions.
