How a Walk to School Can Change Your Day | Hoyeon Koo | TEDxSeoul Youth

Moving from the wide-open nature of California to Seoul, Hoyeon Koo was deeply struck by the everyday scene of almost everyone being constantly glued to a screen, even during the briefest moments of waiting or traveling. Pointing out that we spend a quarter of our waking hours staring down at our phones, she challenges our modern habit of filling every free minute with digital noise and questions what we truly lose when we forfeit the moments of "doing nothing." Her talk reminds us that actively choosing to put down our devices and reconnect with our physical surroundings is not a waste of time, but a refreshing superpower that allows us to fully experience the real world right in front of us. Hoyeon Koo is a Grade 6 student who grew up in California before recently returning to Korea. The contrast was striking: where she once enjoyed wide open spaces and time in nature, she found people in Seoul glued to their screens even in the briefest moments between destinations. That observation prompted a simple but powerful question — is what is happening on a screen truly more important than the world right in front of us? Inspired by her own experience of stepping away from devices and reconnecting with her surroundings, Hoyeon believes that presence is something we have to actively choose. Through her talk, she hopes to encourage audiences to look up, slow down, and rediscover the world around them. When not championing mindfulness, you can find Hoyeon enjoying the outdoors and soaking in the everyday moments most people scroll past. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
