"Clay Pigeons" (Blaze Foley) cover by Dennis Anthonis.
For anyone who's fallen off a horse and struggled with getting back on, or someone who quit playing guitar and had difficulty picking it back up ...check out Blaze Foley. He quit a couple of times along the way. One time during a show, he suddenly threw his guitar to the ground and walked off stage. Fortunately, he picked it up again, at least for a while.
In 1989, Foley's life was cut short when he was shot in the chest and killed by Carey January, the son of Foley's friend Concho January. Foley was only 39 at the time of his death. Foley was a dichotomy, a gentle giant and a rowdy boozer. His friend, Townes Van Zandt once said of Foley, "He's only gone crazy once. Decided to stay."
The story of Blaze Foley is captivating and tragic at the same time and worth investigating. His music will endure now, since famous people have covered his songs, including John Prine, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and Kings of Leon. "Clay Pigeons" is my favorite song of his. I pretty much stick to his lyrics and picking style. I hope I do it a little justice. Forgive me for the canned applause at the end. I couldn't help myself. Please like and share my music. Maybe even subscribe!

"Clay Pigeons" Lyrics:
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound Station, gonna get a ticket to ride.
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side.
Ride till the sun comes up and down around me 'bout two or three times,
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Try to hide my sorrow from the people I meet and get along with it all,
down where the people say y'all.
Sing a song with a friend, change the shape that I'm in
And get back in the game and start playing again.
I'd like to stay but I might have to go to start over again.
I might go back down to Texas, maybe go somewhere I've never been.
Get up in the morning and go out at night and I won't have to go home
Get used to being alone, change the words to this song
And start singin' again
I'm tired of run-in' 'round looking for answers to questions that I already know.
I could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go.
Count the days and the nights that it takes to get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay, turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say.
Feed the pigeons some clay, turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say.
