Christianity's Worst Idea

Christianity has a lot of horrible ideas, ranging from hell to blood sacrifice to pointless shame to the squelching of doubts. So it can seem strange to pick on something as warm and fuzzy as the idea of eternal life. But the concept - especially as articulated in things like Francis Chan’s “rope illustration” - so badly trivializes our entire human existence that I think it’s a good contender. In fact it’s arguably the foundation for most other bad ideas within the religion - because by convincing people that the experiences of this life don’t matter and prompting us to live for empty promises of an eternity that follows, it leaves us open to believe literally any crackpot idea someone could suggest about how to live our lives, set our priorities, and interact with those around us. This is why, as benign as his message sounds, as kind and soft spoken as he comes off, Francis Chan’s message is horribly negligent and irredeemably destructive.
