How Fundamentalism Sabotages Democracy

I’m sure we’ve all seen the crazy clips of preachers responding to the loss of their lord and savior Donald Trump in this year’s election. But what’s behind these weird reactions? Who are these outbursts appealing to? And what does this mean about the influence of religion in American politics?

I’d contend that, while these might appear to be fringe aberrations, these speakers are just manifestations of core teachings of Christianity. And if we’re to come to terms with fundamentalist evangelicalism in our country, we’re going to need to see the underlying radicalizing tenets of Christian doctrine that make believers feel entitled to political success and make outbursts like these inevitable when they don’t.
