Hampi - Bhima's Gate (Near Royal Enclosure)

One of two Bhima's Gates, this one is located just off the main Hampi road and near the Sister Stones.
The design of these gates was for various reasons, but one of the interesting ones was so that no attacking army could easily manoeuvre war elephants inside the entrance. In war, elephants were used as attacking animals on the front line and were extremely frightening when charging forward, often crushing enemy soldiers in the process. You can see by the layout of these gates that defence was a major element in their design.
