Royal Air Force (RAF) Coningsby has been a main operating base since it first opened back on 4 November 1940 under No. 5 Group, part of RAF Bomber Command.

Since that time it has operated some of the most significant aircraft of the RAF including, Avro Lancaster, deHavilland Mosquito, English Electric Canberra, McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, Panavia Tornado F.2/F.3 and currently the Eurofighter Typhoon.

RAF Coningsby is also the home of the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), which moved from RAF Coltishall in March 1976.

RAF Coningsby was the first RAF airfield to receive the Phantom, the Tornado ADV (F.2/F.3) and was the first to receive its replacement, the Eurofighter Typhoon when they arrived in May 2005 with No. 17 Squadron.

This video is an excellent comparison from old to new, with the first section showing Coningsby based Tornado F.3’s operating from the airfield during a NATO-led exercise. The second section comes right up-to-date with a look at the daily operations of the Typhoon, filmed in May, 2021.
