Grey on Purpose | Painting the Hull & Choosing Sailing Over Perfection

Painting a hull is hard enough — procrastination just makes it harder.

In this video, I finally finish painting the hull of my 23ft (7 m) Sharpie trailer yacht, applying three coats of Durepox two-part undercoat followed by two coats of Durepox two-part clear.

I mixed white and black to create a neutral grey, aiming to keep the hull cooler in the sun and reduce the chance of the planking telegraphing through the paint. Was I tempted to go light blue or green? Absolutely. But I already had the grey paint — and at this stage of the build, both time and money are finite resources.

The result won’t make a perfectionist entirely comfortable — and there’s a bit of one in me — but experience has taught me that there’s a point where progress matters more than polish. Instead of painting forever, I’ve chosen to move forward.

It may not be perfect, but the hull is painted — and that means I’m one solid step closer to going sailing.
