Hanseatic Inspiration - Saying Goodbye With Both Horns and Music

Here is the departure of the expedition ship Hanseatic Inspiration from Duluth, Minnesota late on the afternoon of June 4, 2023. She had spent approximately 11 hours in port, docked at Port Terminal to allow her passengers a chance to explore the Duluth area. (Her arrival in the morning was documented in another video on this channel.) For her departure, many of the passengers were out on deck to observe the passage through the shipping canal onto Lake Superior... and wave at the people on the pier who gathered to see them off.

For her first departure from Duluth, we got a traditional captain's salute from the Hanseatic Inspiration, with the Aerial Lift Bridge responding in return. Then came something I've never heard before... the ship started to play music through her loudspeakers! I'm not sure what the tune was. It kind of felt like the soundtrack to a commercial, if I'm being perfectly honest. I guess it was played to "inspire" those on land to sail on an upcoming cruise on the Inspiration. More inspiring for me, however, was another long blast of the ship's horn as she made her way through the shipping canal.

I didn't follow the Hanseatic Inspiration down the canal to watch her clear the lighthouses like I normally would, as the classic lake freighter Hon. James L. Oberstar was not that far behind the Inspiration, making her own departure. So I stayed glued to my position to cover the Oberstar. As fun as it is to watch these cruise ships visit the Twin Ports, my real interest lies in watching the lake freighters... especially the classic ones. Stay tuned for that video soon!

The 452-foot Hanseatic Inspiration was launched in 2019 in Norway. Her sister ships the Hanseatic Nature and Hanseatic Spirit were launched in 2019 and 2021, respectively, and sail for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. She has seven decks and a gross tonnage of 15,650 tons. Her passenger capacity is 230, which is reduced to 199 for Antarctic expeditions. Her crew capacity is approximately 175, meaning that she has nearly a 1.3 to 1 ratio of passengers to crew. She is powered by a diesel electric motor and carries an ice class rating of PC6, the highest of an passenger carrying ship.
