Number 15 Megalodon Shark

This could have easily been Number 1 in this video, but the animal no longer exists so, it’ll be at a comfortable 15th. The Megalodon Shark is the largest predator that ever graced the earth. And this is not in contention because the fish is no longer in any known existence. The male megalodon shark grew up to a length between 34 inches and 47 inches, and a weight of 47.5 tons, so you can only imagine how large its dentition would have been. However, the female Megalodon grew even bigger than the male as it grew up to lengths of 45 to 56 feet and a maximum weight of 65.5 tons. This means the Megalodon had a length three times and weight 20 times more than that of a great white shark. It was right at the top of the food chain, and no other animal dared come close to it at the time it existed. For context, the word “Megalodon” means “large tooth,” so you can imagine a fish being named because of its tooth size. Because of the large size of this creature, it consumed not less than a ton of food daily to stay alive. And its primary diet is comprised of whales and other large animals in the marine habitat like sea cows and sea lions. A lot of fossilized megalodon teeth have been found with sizes ranging from 4 to 5 inches in length.

Some other megalodon teeth have been found, which are over 7 ft. in length. According to scientists, the size of a megalodon’s mouth was up to seven feet when wide open, and its giant teeth were arranged in five deadly rows. The Megalodon had some of the traits of the modern shark, that is, once its teeth became worn, it shed them and replaced them immediately with teeth from other rows. In one lifetime of a megalodon, it went through a thousand cycles of teeth shedding and growing. It also had the strongest and most powerful bite of any animal that ever existed. A single bite of the Megalodon was estimated to be around 20,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds. This kind of bite power can easily cut a small whale into half in one bite. Thankfully, marine creatures can breathe easy now because the Megalodon went extinct about 3.6 million years ago; so no one has to worry about its teeth. But still, it was quite formidable.

Number 14 Helicorpion

This is another animal that has gone extinct, but during its days, it was a terror in the oceans. It was a carnivorous fish that looked a lot like a shark. It lived about 290 million years ago. At the time it existed, it lacked upper teeth as its teeth were attached to its lower jaw. Its teeth did not have the power to prey on animals with hard-shelled or armored bodies. Instead, it preyed on animals with soft bodies so it could easily feed on them without putting its teeth at risk. It fed on prehistoric octopus and squids, and the biting process of the helicorpion was quite different from that of any other animal.

It used the teeth at the front to disable the prey from moving, and once it closed its jaws, the flesh of the prey will be moved back towards the throat where the middle teeth were located. It would then pierce the food with the middle teeth, and then the back teeth did the rest of the chewing before swallowing it. According to scientists, the helicorpion had a bite force of between 267 and 538 pounds, which is quite low when compared to the Megalodon. But for a carnivorous fish of 40 feet, the helicorpion just does enough damage with its teeth.
