10 Strangest Holes On Planet Earth

The world is full of wonders and mysteries beyond our wildest imagination. Sometimes humans stumble over something that blows our minds away, and there are countless things that we just haven't figured out yet. There's long been speculation over what's under the earth, and even though we know now, there are still people who believe all sorts of theories. Is the earth hollow, and do people live in the middle? Are there monsters under the ground? Occurrences like reverse sinkholes that hint at alien involvement the hole dug by the devil himself or the hole that led to several scientific discoveries.

Here are the 10 Strangest Holes On Planet Earth.

KOLA SUPERDEEP BOREHOLE

Some holes in the earth's crust are man-made. The Russians dug through the earth for over fourteen years and eventually created what's now called the Kola Superdeep Borehole. They eventually dug as deep as 7.5 miles into the earth and made some staggering discoveries. Along with the remains of two billion years old animals that once lived on the surface, they found tiny fossils of planktons too.

It's surprising how these fragile biological compounds withstood all the pressure- at the time of their discovery they were 22,000 feet inside the earth. That's 22 Eiffel Towers stacked into one another! It was a bit harder to examine rock samples from the earth. Anything that they took out from the depths deformed easily when all the pressure and the heat were taken away from them. Drilling had to eventually stop when the heat became too much for the scientists to combat, but the hole still sits there next to the town of Zapolyarny in Russia, now covered with a metal "cap".

DEAD SEA SINKHOLES

It's scary to think that holes have a habit of erupting, seemingly out of nowhere, in multiple places on earth. But over 2,500 sinkholes have formed around the dead sea in just the last 15 years alone. Scientists blame environmental change, of course. The Dead Sea is fed by the Jordan River, but every year the water that reaches it decreases.

The sea itself is just one-third the size it used to be in the 1960s, and scientists believe that's what is causing the sinkholes. As the salty water of the Dead Sea recedes, freshwater from the Jordan River cones to take its place. Because of the low salt content of the freshwater, salt is dissolved into it which decreases the overall stability and saltiness of the ground, causing it to give way and sinkholes to form.
