Nancy continues the Quilted Tiles tutorial by showing you how to create the bias stems for the designs. She takes you through the steps of how she came to decide on the colors and what stems to make with her selection of fabrics. She likes to make lots of bias stems first so she can just grab what she needs when she is adding them to the design.
Nancy is using Collins Quilter's No-Melt Press Bars to create the bias strips. She has chosen the quarter inch size bar out of the five sizes for this tutorial. The Collins Quilter's No-Melt Press Bars are no longer available on the market. You can use the Perfect Stems tool from Karen Kay Buckley.
She starts with a half to five eighths of a yard of fabric. She recommends using a half to five eighths of a yard so the bias stems don't get too long. You can also use fat quarters to make the stems.
Lay your fabric down with the back side showing or wrong side up. Take the bottom corner and fold it up. Bring the bias edge down.
You will be cutting on the bias edge but it is still a little to long to easily cut. Fold it down once more. Take the extra end and fold it up onto itself and back again. Roll up the end. Use a larger square ruler. The 12.5 inch square size works best. Place some Omnigrid glow line tape under the ruler at the one and half inch widths to power cut strips. Line up the horizontal line on the ruler to the edge of the fabric and then cut off the bias edge. Spin it around and start at the nine inch mark. Line up the fabric so it meets the vertical and horizontal measuring lines on the ruler to cut the first strip. Continue cutting the strips lining up the fabric and ruler at each glow line tape mark. Each cut is two strips.
Nancy tapes down a needle case next to her foot on her sewing machine to provide a guide when sewing the strips. She moves her needle over. She then takes the strip putting wrong sides together and places it with the fold next to the needle case guide to sew. She has left enough space to easily slide in the quarter inch Quilter's No-Melt Press Bar. She continues making the rest of the stems in the same manner. After sewing all the stems, cut off the extra fabric leaving an eighth of an inch from the seam on each one.
Slide the stem on the Quilter's No-Melt Press Bar. The stitched line is at a sixteenth of an inch so the seam can be pressed down toward you. When you look at it from the top you don't see any of the seam allowance. Continue to shove the stem on the bar and move the gathering down until it is all on. Once it is all on, push toward one end, slowly push it off the bar and press. Try not to stretch the stem to keep the flexibility in the fabric. Keeping pressing the stem until it is all off the bar. Turn over and press again. Make the rest of the stems using the bar and pressing with the iron.
Look for the next tutorial where Nancy will show you how to transfer your design on background fabric and how to apply the stems to the design. Thank you for watching!
