Nancy is starting the quilt series for Quilted Tiles blocks. The Quilted Tiles are loosely based on Celtic Quilts. Nancy shares some books and patterns she has used. A book called Celtic Quilts by Beth Ann Williams is one of the inspirations along with patterns from HD Designs of the Celtic alphabet.
Once you know how to make bias stems used for Celtic quilts, the options are limitless. Nancy shows an example on a border. She has also taught how to use the bias stems on the Learning to Quilt quilt. (Nancy's book and ebook, Learning To Quilt, are available on www.onpoint-tv.com.) She shares some examples she has designed which inspired her to do the Quilted Tiles tutorials. Her most recent design looks very similar to Moroccan Tiles. Moroccan Tiles are brightly colored with some in blues and yellows. The blue and yellow caught Nancy's eye and she made the first of four blocks.
She starts with drawing out the designs. The designs will be available to download on www.onpoint-tv.com. But Nancy challenges you to create your own. You can add or change the design as you go. You can use freezer paper for and 18 inch square block or choose a smaller size. Follow Nancy as she folds the paper into eight layers. Make sure you are aware of where the center of the block is before you start drawing. Nancy uses a FriXion pen since it is erasable. Use a ruler for some straight lines and then draw in some swirls. Mark an inch from the edge of the paper so you don't draw to close to the edges.
Nancy puts a larger needle into her machine and stitches her drawn design without thread. She takes some colored Sharpie markers to add color to her design. She colors areas where she might add some fabric pieces. She's keep working on her design and may make some changes as she goes.
In the next tutorial, Nancy will take the design, transfer it onto the back ground fabric and teaching you how to make the quarter inch bias stems. New videos every Thursday!
