JTWC issued advisories on the system while the JMA designated the system as a weak tropical depression. On August 8, the JTWC followed suit and designated the system as 07W. Further intensification occurred on the same day, and the JMA later upgraded the system into a tropical storm, giving it the name Lan. As the system moved towards favorable conditions, it was further upgraded into a typhoon category at 08:00 UTC on the next day. Early on August 15, Lan made landfall in Wakayama Prefecture.
Several rivers flooded their banks. Nearly 900 flights were cancelled and 240,000 people were ordered to evacuate. 90,000 households experienced power outages.
