Very Rusty Door Latch Restoration | Random Restoration

Welcome! For today's restoration I will be restoring this very rusty old mortise lock latch, likely from the late 1890s to early 1900s. Looks like I'll be back on another door hardware restoration spree.

I found this awful looking latch set online while looking for hardware to restore and knew it'd make for an awesome restoration. Upon receiving it I immediately recognized that the rust covered (well the shanks were rusty) ceramic door knobs were badly chipped and were subsequently unpreparable.

After cutting a new groove (which had to repair later) in the severely rusted case screw I was able to remove it. I pried off the cover to find that the interior was much more rusty than the exterior. I knew this was going to be a very rusty restoration, but holy smokes was it bad in there! After removing all the parts I threw them into the good ol' rust removal bucket of goodness.

After the rust was all gone I moved onto cleaning up the damaged, tarnished brass faceplate. There was no need for paint stripping this time around since the rust had removed all the paint for me. A lot of sanding and polishing later and it looked new! Polishing brass up to a nice mirror finish is always a great sight to see. All the remaining parts/surfaces were wire wheeled.

After this I applied body filler to the heavily pitted areas on the exterior of the case and case cover. A lot more sanding later and it was finally time for some painting. The case and case cover were both painted inside and out, as that's how it was (almost certainly) originally painted. It was very common for both the interior and exterior to be painted in old mortise locks and similar door hardware.

Next I moved onto the small parts. I sanded the damage away with the case screw. The spindle hub and case screw were then given a cold bluing bath and soaked in oil overnight. Bluing steel is one of those extra satisfying things to watch, though I may or may not have gotten very good footage this time. Now it was time to restore the latch bolt. I had to figure out how to get the best results since it had a lot of damage from rust. I ended up sanding only the portion that extends from the case, then gave it a nice polish.

After that I went ahead an reassembled it. Then it was time for a test, and it worked like new! Although it may not be a 100% perfect restoration, considering what this latch was like before restoration I reckon it's pretty close! The door knob and rosette that I used for the test will be featured in an upcoming mortise lock restoration video.
