Restoring Rusty Ornate Door Latches | Random Restoration
Welcome!
In today's video I will be restoring two very old 'Eastlake' style door latches. During this video you can expect to see the disassembly, paint stripping, rust removal, cleaning and hand painting of both door latches.
Both of these latches were in very different stated when I came across them. The first latch, which mounts to the top of the door, was in quite good shape with minimal rust. The second latch, which mounts to the bottom of the door and acts more as a lock, was in awful condition. It's obvious that this had spent many years, if not decades outdoors in subpar conditions, where it collected a significant amount of rust. Furthermore, likely due to rust, the back plate which is required for this latch to operate correctly was broken off around an area where a spring would normally go.
Both of these latches would have been originally brass or copper plated, and then the recessed areas around the designs were painted with black paint. Although I don't currently have the capability to re-plate them, I opted to sand down the rough designs as much as possible and repaint both of these latches as they would have been when new. I then applied a clear coat to them to keep them rust free.
