Arm Stretches and Exercises for Stroke Patients
Do you have a bent arm or flexion spasticity after a stroke? Do you want to straighten it and regain your arm function? If so, you’re in the right place. In this video, I’m going to show you a simple and effective program that you can do at home to stretch your bent stroke arm. This program will help you improve your range of motion, prevent contractures and spasticity, and reduce pain and stiffness.
In this program, we will do a top down approach. Meaning, we will start from the shoulder going down to your wrist and hand. This is necessary, because even if the your concern is to be able to use your hand, that is difficult to achieve if the shoulder And the elbow and the rest of your arm is still spastic and tight. You won’t be able to reach for things that you need day today and use your hand if everything else is tight.

1. Shoulder Flexion
* Put your arm on a table and sit down on a chair. Your elbow can be bent.
* Move your body in different directions to loosen your shoulder.
* Scoot back and bend down to stretch your shoulder more.
* Massage the area near your armpit if your chest muscles are tight.
* Bring your arm behind the chair and lean forward to stretch your chest and shoulder.
2. Elbow Extension
* Put your arm back on the table and straighten it slowly. Don’t force it or it might bounce back.
* Massage your biceps and brachioradialis muscle if they are tight. Move your hand back and forth and side to side.
3. Forearm Pronation
* With your arm straight on the table, turn your forearm up slowly.
* Hold for a few seconds and turn it back down.
* Repeat 6 times.
4. Wrist Extension
* With your arm and hand down on the table, move your wrist to the edge of the table.
* Stretch your thumb out first and then open your fingers with your other hand.
* Slide your arm back to bring your wrist and hand back on the table.
5. Open Your Stroke Hand
* After stretching your wrist, your hand should be open on the table.
* Use a splint to keep your hand open and wear it for an hour.
