Amazing Moments as the Whole Elephant Herd Walk to the Dam for a Mud Bath
The herd bustle down the narrow dirt path to the "beach", where the mud collects on the sides of the dam in perfect wallows. Setombe and daughter, Klaserie lead to family, with Pisa and Mambo (two leaders in their own rights, even as youngsters) follow up front too. Zindoga and Kumbura follow on with Khanyisa's babysitters all around her: mother Lundi, big bull Fishan, Limpopo and little Timisa. Jabulani is close to Khanyisa too and after Tigere, our dedicated Elephant Manager, comes dominant bull Sebakwe with Bubi, Somopane and Tokwe.
Sebakwe can be a bit boisterous with the other bulls in the herd and on this day Somopane is afraid to pass him as the elephants get to a narrowing in the road. Rather than cause a fight, Somopane waits for Sebakwe to smell out what seems like wild elephants having pulled down some branches of the tree. Sebakwe's strength is known far and wide, yet later at the dam, he seems to show his gentle side again as he give Khanyisa a trunk-push after she rolls about in the mud.
Khanyisa certainly knows who her mother is, at least adoptive mother, in the herd and stays close to Lundi as often as her little legs allow. Kumbura is the perfect nanny as all the elephants get stuck into the mud around the dam. Khanyisa gets some mud to the face after Lundi accidentally splashes her, and then the little calf takes over for herself and tosses that tiny trunk about in the loose watery mud to help coat her body.
It's a beautiful day out in the reserve and Fishan takes advantage of having the dam to himself and heads into the water. He prefers not to swim too close to others, since recovering from his fractured leg injury. He loves the water as much as he always has and goes in deep while the others stay on the outskirts. Perhaps the water is colder than it looks.
