Maryland Veteran Headstones Covered in Neglect

Veteran headstones in Maryland are covered in neglect including algae, lichens, dirt, and grime. On my way to a cemetery on the west side of Fox's Gap, one of three gaps where the Civil War Battle of South Mountain was fought three days prior to the Battle of Antietam, I stopped in Middletown, MD. On either side of the main road through town were two large church cemeteries with thousands of graves. As I walked the first church cemetery, I was surprised by the lack of veteran headstones, so I visited the second cemetery, Zion Lutheran Cemetery, and there found only three veteran headstones. All three were covered in black filth. Two were Civil War Union cavalrymen and one, Martin Luther Lutz, died a World War I Soldier in France on September 17, 1918. He died on the 56th anniversary of the bloodiest day in American history.

The white marble veteran headstone marking the grave of Martin Luther Lutz is in bad shape. Unlike the headstones in Arlington and all other National Cemeteries, veteran headstones in private, church, and municipal cemeteries across Maryland are not cared for as per the protocol issued by the National Cemetery Administration. Can you imagine if the stones in Arlington National Cemetery looked like they do in Maryland cemeteries? Apparently, the people of Maryland have short memories when it comes to the sacrifices made by their sons and daughters.

I'm here to tell you Maryland, somebody else is not caring for the veteran headstones in your state. Dirty, leaning, sunken, and fallen best describe the condition of veteran headstones in the State of Maryland.

And where are the congressionally recognized service organizations within the State of Maryland? Why have these organizations NOT cared for the sacred stone of Private Martin Luther Lutz? And, why haven't these organizations ordered a new veteran headstone from the National Cemetery Administration to replace this worn out eroded monument?

Will you help care for veteran headstones and grave markers located within private, church, and municipal cemeteries in your Maryland town? Visit ByMemorialDay.com to watch how-to videos and find a link to the protocol for cleaning government-furnished veteran headstones and grave markers issued by the National Cemetery Administration.
