Indiana Veteran Headstones in Sad Shape
Abraham Lincoln learned the law at the Warrick County Courthouse in Boonville, IN, but you wouldn't know it based on the sad condition of Union Soldier veteran headstones in the Sharon Cemetery near Newburgh. There is no statue in Warrick County, Indiana dedicated to the local men who answered Lincoln's call for troops between 1861 and 1865. As a matter of fact, there isn't even a statue dedicated to Abraham Lincoln in Warrick County, IN!
Within the small roadside Sharon Cemetery I found 18 veteran headstones provided by the National Cemetery Administration. Most were marking the graves of Union Soldiers from the Civil War. Most of those Union Soldier graves contain the remains of local men who enlisted in the 25th Indiana Infantry Regiment at Evansville, Indiana on August 19, 1861. On April 6, 1862, the men now resting beneath the forgotten veteran headstones in Sharon Cemetery, encrusted in years of filthy biological growth, stepped off troop transports at a place along the Tennessee River called Shiloh. The commander of Union forces that day was Ulysses S. Grant. The 25th Indiana would desperately hold onto the shoreline of the Tennessee by their toenails until nightfall. Confederate forces commanded by the best general in the South had whipped tar out of the yankees and were on the verge of wiping out Grant's army when a Minie ball tore through the knee of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston. The Southern victory momentum at Shiloh bled out along with General Johnston. The 25th Indiana boys forgotten in Sharon Cemetery counter attacked on the morning of April 7th prying victory from the grasp of the men in butternut and grey. Other battles fought by the 25th Indiana included Jonesboro, GA and Bentonville, NC.
