One of the first few scripted TV series with a regular trans character, THE EDUCATION OF MAX BICKFORD, set at a university, debuted on this date in 2001.

Helen Shaver (a cis woman) played Erica, the title character's longtime best friend, who had transitioned well before the story began. She was a well-developed supporting character, a college professor.

This was about six years before American TV series started casting trans actors in ongoing trans roles.
