TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY
THE SANFORD ARMS: "Phil's Past" - 10/14/1977, NBC
On 1970s black-cast sitcoms, queer recurring roles were almost nonexistent (even rarer than on 70s TV in general). The exception was this character: Angie's friend Travis (Lisle Wilson), an uptight, dorky gay lawyer seen in a few episodes.
The main character, Phil, finds Travis odd and a bit irritating but basically likes him and turns to him when his businesses have legal problems.
Before learning that the lawyer was gay, Phil assumed his daughter Angie was dating Travis.
